Punctures, Chains, Brakes: Common Bike Problems and How to Avoid Them on Holiday

Punctures, a slipping chain, fading brakes: the most common bike problems on a ride and the simple steps to avoid or fix them on the spot.

Punctures, Chains, Brakes: Common Bike Problems and How to Avoid Them on Holiday

Common bike problems and how to handle them

Nothing ruins a great ride around the Étang de Thau faster than a puncture 10 km from the start. Most of these incidents are easy to avoid with a few simple habits, and often fixable on the spot. Here's the essentials before you set off.

1. The puncture

It's the number-one problem. The most common causes: thorns, glass shards, or too-low tyre pressure.

To avoid it:

  • check tyre pressure before every ride (an under-inflated tyre punctures far more easily);
  • avoid debris-strewn verges;
  • ask for a puncture repair kit when you rent.

To fix it: a puncture-repair spray or a spare inner tube + tyre levers + a mini-pump will save the day. If you're not comfortable, call us: we advise our customers by phone and service our rentals.

2. A slipping or grinding chain

A chain that jumps or squeals is almost always a matter of cleanliness and lubrication.

To avoid it:

  • a clean, lightly oiled chain lasts longer and shifts better;
  • avoid extreme gear combinations (big chainring + big sprocket) that strain the chain;
  • shift while pedalling smoothly, never under force.

To fix it: if the chain comes off, stop, put it back on the chainring by hand (gloves or a cloth help), and set off gently. If it keeps jumping, it's a derailleur adjustment — best left to a pro.

3. Fading brakes

Less bite from your brakes usually means worn pads or a slack cable.

To avoid it:

  • test your brakes at walking pace, right from the start, before picking up speed;
  • on long descents (rare here, but they exist towards Sète), brake in short pulses rather than continuously.

To fix it: a brake that rubs or no longer responds must be checked before you continue. When it comes to safety, there's no compromise.

The ideal on-ride emergency kit

For a ride around the Thau, carry:

  • a mini-pump or puncture-repair spray;
  • a spare inner tube + tyre levers;
  • a bike multi-tool (Allen keys);
  • something to stay hydrated and a charged phone.
