From Marseillan to Mèze and Bouzigues: The North Shore of the Étang de Thau by Bike

The north shore of the Étang de Thau by bike

Everyone knows the Marseillan-to-Sète route along the sandbar. Far rarer and just as beautiful: the north shore, linking Marseillan to Mèze and then Bouzigues. A flat, scenic and very tasty ride, ideal for a relaxed day.

At a glance

  • Distance: about 18 km one way (Marseillan → Bouzigues), 36 km round trip.
  • Difficulty: easy, flat terrain. Doable on a hybrid, e-bike or kids' bike for the short sections.
  • Duration: 2 h of pedalling, but allow a full day with tasting stops.
  • Highlights: oyster ports, lagoon views, authentic villages.

Stage 1 — Leaving Marseillan

You leave Marseillan via the port edges and the quiet lanes hugging the north-west shore of the lagoon. The pace quickly slows: this is the land of oyster cabins and fishermen's tables. Top up your water before setting off.

Stage 2 — Mèze, the lively port

After a few kilometres, Mèze appears with its bustling port. It's one of the oldest towns on the Thau basin. Stop along the quays, by the shellfish farms, and head up into the village centre for a coffee in the shade.

Mèze is also a good turnaround point if you're riding with young children: the Marseillan–Mèze round trip stays very manageable.

Stage 3 — Bouzigues, the oyster capital

The Mèze → Bouzigues stretch is the prettiest: the road winds right along the water, with oyster beds spreading across the lagoon. Bouzigues is THE foodie stop. Settle in facing the water for a dozen Bouzigues oysters and a few mussels, with a glass of Picpoul de Pinet.

The Étang de Thau museum in Bouzigues is also worth a detour to understand the history of local shellfish farming.

The return

Same route back, but with different light in late afternoon over the lagoon — often the best moment. If the wind picks up (common in the afternoon), an e-bike makes the return far more comfortable.

Tip: leave early in the morning for the calm and the cool air, and book your table in Bouzigues in high season — the best spots fill up fast.

Practical advice

  • Water and snacks: villages are spread out, carry enough to last between stops.
  • Lock: bring a good lock to park with peace of mind during tastings.
  • Family: stick to Marseillan–Mèze with young children, and save Bouzigues for older ones.
